Democracy USA...kind of

This passage in the book reminded me of a class I took last semester entitled Democracy and Ed. Democracy. I cannot remember the last time I truly saw an example of democracy in my education let alone in politics (except for obama). Anyways, even though the book does not really address in education, I'm going to rant. There is no democracy in our educational system. Every curriculum is given to students in a authoritarian way. The teacher stands in front of the class throws a bunch of information at the students and then expects them to spit it back out on a test. How is that democratic..at all? Students should be able to chose something other than their class schedule, which is sometimes even chosen for them. In reference to the book, democracy is truly no where. Corporations own us as consumers and its just something we have to deal with.

Luxury in Prison?

I find it weird that drug addicts and criminals can have the choice of a luxury prison. I did not know that luxury and prison could be used in the same sentence. Luxury in prisons are like intelligence and Paris Hilton: they just don't connect. It's bothersome to me that Paris Hilton spent like what a week in prison and that Kardashian girl spent like six hours in jail for a DUI? My brother's best friend spent two months in jail and spent over five thousand dollars in fines for a barely there DUI. Back to luxury in prisons not just in reference to the super rich. If I killed someone I would expect to sit in a jail cell with BIG BERTHA and expect to be a bitch the rest of my life. Not in a cushy "cell" possibly alone. How does that work? I was brought up to be thankful for my privileges and if I did something to lose them I should expect to, well, lose them. I was never taught to do something, be proven guilty, and then get a sweet deal on punishment. If I broke a window I got extra chores for weeks depending on what window. If I did poorly in school, I didn't see my friends for days on end. But I don't know, I guess my mother never heard about luxury prisons when she was punishing me, maybe I would have spent more time breaking windows and getting C's if she had.

The Last of UnSpun

What interested me the most about the ending was the information about Hoodia and all of it's diet wonders. I remember a couple years ago, before Hoodia hit the market, my father and I were watching the news. All of the sudden some blonde haired newscaster was walking what I remember as the deserts looking for a special kind of cacti. In these cacti was pure Hoodia. I remember her saying how the product is only months away from being on the market. She tried some in its rawest form and said her appetite was curbed for the rest of the day. In terms of on the shelf Hoodia, this product is miles away from it's rawest form. 'Pill Hoodia' is jam packed with other types of chemicals which harm the body while maybe curbing your appetite. The effectiveness of Hoodia is propaganda at it's best. My best friend from home tried it in pill form from the company SlimQuick. Her appetite wasn't all that curbed and the pills made her feel sick to her stomach. Surprising? Not really. That Hoodia the newscaster had was wholesome cacti and the stuff my friend had was processed Hoodia in it's smallest most broken down form. Just because a substance originally came from nature doesn't mean it's going into your body that way.
